San Diego Hip Hop Potluck BBQ this Sunday

Like a month ago or more, someone started this “Daygo hip hop” group on Facebook. You could only get in by invite but it’s already amassed close to 900 people. More importantly, it’s become the new online message board-ish area for artists and everyone to connect, check out music, and actually talk about stuff. If you’re not already a member, you should probably find someone who can invite you and join the discussion (though I do wonder at what point too many people will be talking and it’ll all become an indecipherable clutter; hopefully, not soon).

This Sunday’s potluck-BBQ is an open invite to pretty much anyone with even a passing interest in hip-hop to come meet up with each other. Rappers, break dancers, DJ’s, graf heads, bloggers (because blogging is the fifth element of hip-hop?), and everyone else is welcome.

Orko Eloheim, Tenshun, Parker Edison, Piff PCH Herrera at Kava Lounge This Wednesday

Why am I just getting wind of this over the past weekend? I would’ve totally blown this up a lot more if I could’ve. I’ve never heard Coastal Ninja or No Face. But if the company surrounding them is any indication–Orko, Tenshun, Parker, and Piff (… and Circle Empire?)–they’re likely to be pretty dope. I know I missed like three of the four events I’d planned on attending last week (to my credit, the Trina show was sold out on pre-sale [and hella expensive!] and, um, I was too drunk to drive to the chikle x Makeshift thing). But I will definitely not miss this show unless like Jesus Christ immaculately re-conceptualizes in my womb or something (sequel to Junior, anyone?). So yeah, barring the re-birth of Christ and shit, I will be there on Wednesday and so should you!

Happy Belated to Orko!

Pac Div, XV, Casey Veggies, Black Resume … One Last Chance

Wow, so the contest/event page has had the second most hits on this site in the past week. And yet, only one person has responded with the correct answer so far.

One last chance: First person that leaves a freaking comment in this post telling me that they want the tickets to the show, he/she gets put on the guestlist +1 for Saturday. Really simple. Free stuff: don’t miss out.

Reconquista: Chikle x Makeshift Experimental Art Exhibit

Hmmm, intriguing. I might have to hit this up with my artsy Filipino friends. Though I’m probably more interested in hearing Makeshift beats. This art exhibit opening/event/whatever is going down this Saturday night. Thankfully, it’s from 6pm-9pm so there is zero time conflict with the Pac Div/Black Rez show at UCSD. Hit the jump for a second promo video and then the flyer with all the details. Read more of this post

San Diego Pride Red Carpet Party with Trina, Miki Vale

Mostly posting this for weird factor. Trina is performing this Friday at this lesbian bar called The Flame Ultra Lounge in Hillcrest. Miki Vale is hosting along with her group The [Sis]tem. It’s odd enough seeing Trina and The [Sis]tem on the same bill. But I guess I’m more tripped out at the idea of Trina using her sexuality in a lesbian context. No shots; it’s just eye-opening for me. And I might have to be that one random dude in a lesbian bar this Friday just to check it out. This is gonna be so awkward.

Lyrical Skool Yard One Year Anniversary with Sojourn, Blame One

If you’re in North County, check out Sojourn, Blame, and Kahlee rocking for the Lyrical Skool Yard One Year Anniversary show. Supernatural is headlining (in front of Abstract Rude? I didn’t see that one coming) and you might could impress a girl with his freestyle skill (weird how it works like that right? I guess you get cool points for knowing about it or something). Should be a fun show. Watch out for the cops though. Last time I went, they were hella crawling everywhere as I was getting lost, trying to find the venue. Then one of them pulled me over. I didn’t get a ticket but I’m just saying to be extra careful and shit.

SoundDiego LIVE: Black Resume and Parker & The Numberman at HOB

Excuse the slightest bit of self-promotion. One of the cooler things about my new gig at SoundDiego is the monthly SoundDiego LIVE shows that they put on. Every month, they put on a free show with local artists. The bloggers take turns each month organizing the lineup. The artists get free promo. Fans get a free show. SoundDiego gets to front like they’re hella cool (I kid!). It’s all fairly awesome.

This month is my first crack at helping program the lineup, which takes me back to my days at university when our student group basically wasted thousands of dollars in student tuition to put on hip-hop shows with underground artists that only like 50 other students actually came to see (insult to injury: student tuition has steadily been rising for years, exacerbating accessibility issues for students from low-income families–I am very sorry if I contributed to that trend at all). Hopefully this SoundDiego show isn’t using any public money and we can have a guilt-free party on NBC’s dime.

Anyway, Black Resume and Parker & The Numberman are on this month’s show, which is going down this Thursday, June 30 at House of Blues. I chose the two acts because I’ve seen both of them perform and they put on a good show. Black Rez get people dancing. P&# might be the next to kinda blow up locally. It should be a fun night. Check out the details below and, if you want to make sure you get in, sign up for the guestlist here:

Odessa Kane, Sojourn at Lyrical Skoolyard, April 21

I’m gonna be checking this out all the way up in North County this Thursday. Odessa Kane and Sojourn should make this a good night, not to mention Keith Murray. Unfortunately, I missed Odessa and a few other good shows a couple weekends ago because I got sick. But I guess this will make up for it. Masters of the Universe for life.

FRONTLINE: Reclaim History, Obtain Victory event with Odessa Kane

This protest/demonstration/somethinglikethat is going down on April 9 at 12noon in front of Malcolm X Library. I’m not exactly sure what it’s about other than the fact that Filipino(sp?) activists are organizing it so it should be pretty damn legit. Performances by Odessa Kane and Bambu and, uhhhh, other Filipino artists. The track on this promo vid is sick, by the way, beat by Aims.

Orko, Black Mikey, Parker & The Numberman at Urban Underground

This is going down and I’m probably more excited about the local lineup than the headliner. Parker & The Numberman were pretty dope at Portugalia. Orko is being listed as “The Sycotic Alien.” Black Mikey is Black Mikey. Should be swagged out.
