Let’s just agree to ignore the fact that this guy’s name is Ez Pennybagz for a second. Ready? Okay.

I culled these two tracks of Ez Pennybagz’ SoundCloud page. Neither of these two have production credits but I’m betting they were produced by either Mike George or Kriis Money (can someone confirm? Because if not, the rest of this will sound real assholish). The two of them handled productions duties on a solid stoner-themed mixtape from last year, Mac V. and Karma’s Coffee Table Talk. Kriis also executive produced Marty MacPhly’s Cheers mixtape-album that was featured here a short while ago.

I think I got carried away before describing the music as pristine space-travelling shit. But the music definitely has this calming nighttime feel, the sort of feeling you get looking up at a clear sky full of stars while taking a walk in the evening. I guess that’s what I was getting at with the space-age angle. I imagine this feeling would only be amplified if you were floating in space so close to the stars. “Koo’ Laid” starts off with nothing but these tinkling, otherworldly xylophones. Then it slowly builds layer by layer throughout the song with drums then bass then rhodes then vocal accents and finally a bit of piano, turning into a beautiful cacophony. “The Dwell” is less dynamic but no less inviting or blissful.

Rapping-wise, I’m digging Marty PacPhly more and more. He’s a solid rapper with good writing ability, wordplay, and a penchant for knocking me flat with one liners like on “The Dwell” when he opens his verse with “I’m honored to be in front of this instead of Your Honor.” Dre Trav also has a good verse on the same song that puts his braggadocio in the context of providing for his family. It’s real warm and squishy like that.

Koo’ Laid is a mixtape J Dilla track played by the Roots off of their Album: Dilla Joints. Use of the track definitely reflects and is inspired by the feeling captured by the Kriis Money & Mike George production team and our way of showcasing our versatility as artists. We do make those club bangers, but at the same time we are intelligent young thinkers deeply rooted in Hip Hop. The Dwell is an original record that was produced by Epik the Dawn. It was a record that was important to us because this independent grind is no joke and although we are artists that carry ourselves in a confident manner. We still at the end of the day are human beings with families, feelings and a drive to become more well rounded human beings. We at MoneyFirst appreciate the love, support, and constructive criticism from SDRaps.com. Whether positive or negative feedback, our time and energy that we put into our craft being recognized is more than enough. Thank you. “Everything’s MoneyFirst” is out now. http://www.itsmoneyfirst.com log on!

Thanks for the production credits. Not catching the Dilla/Roots joint–that’s what I get for listening to nothing but San Diego music. Still, the sound on “The Dwell” and some of your other music definitely reflects the same aesthetic. Surprised “Dwell” isn’t produced by either Mike or Kriis but it’s still dope.
