Random Notes From the SDMA’s That Probably Should’ve Been Live-Blogged But My Broke-Ass Doesn’t Have A Smartphone

The San Diego Music Awards Show took place last night at Humphrey’s. Some random impressions that should’ve been posted on Twitter if my phone had Internet access. I also would’ve posted this last night but then I got caught up listening to dudes rap like billy goats:

  • Jimmy Powers has the opening performance. Obviously, many of these performances are gonna suck since everyone’s sitting down in chairs as opposed to jumping up and down in a bunched up crowd. I think Jimmy performed two songs, “Califoreigner” and “Same James.” I would’ve like to see him take off the shades and explain the meaning behind a song as personal as “Same James” before launching into it. It would’ve worked well with this crowd, I think.
  • The award for “Best Hip Hop” is the first of the night. It’s being presented by this white chick who’s hamming up her lack of hip hop-ness way too much. She seriously did The Dougie. The way that she jokes about it, you can tell how little she respects it as an art.
  • The official definition of “hip hop” on the presenter’s cards included: hip-hop, rap, urban rhythmic, and R&B. Basically, all the colored people. Reminds me of how whenever a male R&B singer like Ne-Yo or R. Kelly is in the news, the story always calls him a rapper.
  • Deep Rooted win “Best Hip Hop,” which is a bit of a relief. The only Deep Rooted member there is DJ Artistic, who “thanks CityBeat for acknowledging hip-hop.” Which I’ll take as a compliment to my story. But I also think it sounds sad that we have to thank someone just for acknowledging hip-hop as a legitimate art.
  • Artistic has pretty long dreads. I bet if he wanted, he could out-do Mr. Lif’s living alien-ass hairdo.
  • I met Jimmy Powers’ Irish Catholic mom, who reads the site. She joked that she had a bone to pick with me. I’m glad she didn’t make me do 50 Hail Mary’s.
  • Jimmy introduced me to dude from Vokab Kompany, who I kinda blew off. I’d like to officially say sorry, I’m hella awkward in real-life social situations (which is why I’m a blogger, hah). Didn’t mean to blow you off, dude.
  • I ran into The Numberman from Parker & The Numberman. But he was actually at the SDMA’s because he plays keys for a rock outfit, whose album was up for one of the awards. Multi-talented dude.
  • Peter Holslin introduces me to DJ Artistic, who calls me a “legend” in his drunkenness. Artistic proceeds to formally introduce me to CROS1, which is really awkward because I was hanging around him for awhile like a freaking stalker, looking for an opening to introduce myself. So when Art introduces us, I look like I was just being a fake jerk-off who thought he was too cool to introduce himself to CROS1. Networking fail. Sorry dude, seriously, I need to stay on the Interwebz!
  • Like 90% of the people there are nominees or media. Which makes it hilarious that this one bitch standing in front of me in line outside was acting like she was all tight just because she had a media pass. GTFOH bitch, hah!
  • These other performances really put hip-hop to shame. The singer from the “Best Acoustic” category got some jazz pipes. The Wreckords just brought in like a 20-piece string orchestra.
  • “Best Hip-Hop Album” goes to Vokab Kompany, which I’m not really mad about. I know I said I’d write about all the nominees but I got a little too busy/lazy. Of the nominees in this category, I would’ve gone: 1. Black Resume – Bar-Barian Music; 2. Jimmy Powers – Califoreigner; 3. Vokab Kompany – The New Kong; a distant 4. Touch of CAS – The Real; and then everyone else was pretty meh.
  • I dipped after Vokab won. Because I preferred listening to rap alone in my room over finding out the winner of the “Best Cover Band.”

And now we can get back to the music. See ya next year!

Black Resume will be up for a lot more awards… They are by far the best thing that has happend for West Coast Hip Hop since Chronic 2001! And thats no joke… People will recognise soon… But Vokab Kombany?!?!?! Give me a break!!! Has anyone heard Bar-Barian Music? Apparently the Rez needs to be 40 year old white boys before they win what they deserve…. Im sure they’ll get more than what they deserve soon enough….

Buck, I agree…. Im a PQ local and I’ve heard Black Resume’s album… That is real hip hop… The group serves a style that is both original yet old school. Who ever produces the beats is a genius… Yes some are better than other, but Im a true hip hop fan and Ill tell u this much… Its a relief to hear original beats instead of a mix tape… BLACK RESUME KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!! I would love to see u guys rock it live one day!!!

    Chirstian (typo?) -

Have you heard Vokab Kompany’s album? If not, I suggest you listen before you diss it. Just because they don’t fit your narrow definition of hip-hop doesn’t mean the album wasn’t good. I suggest you check ‘em out some time. Oh, and if because of the weaksauce argument that having a live band in your act excludes you from being hip-hop, then someone might wanna let The Roots know…

    Peace.

I thought it was pretty cool that you apologized for blowing us off, even though I don’t remember it and wasn’t offended, but it was appreciated. We were honored to win the best hip hop album award amongst such great nominees. Are we hip hop? I personally feel being classified as anything is limiting, especially in art, theatre or music, as it generally tries to target you audience by narrowing your range. If Hip Hop is a guy in rapping over a pre recorded beat, overdubs lined up and a monolog of demands for the a head bobbing audience, then we def don’t fit the bill. We consider our music progressive, like hip hop, in that both styles have grown from the ones they preceded and continue to progress. We have been fortunate enough to work on songs with some the pioneers of the current model many hold hip hop to, such as Aplus, Luckyiam, Lateef the Truth Speaker, Main flow, Jboogie and Killa Preist. We also collaborate with Non-hip hop acts like members of Cage the Elephant and Spearhead. We have a violins, and a slew of instruments, thus our range isn’t limited to our prerecorded beats, giving us a broad spectrum of music idea’s, as we are fans of many different genre’s of music. We appreciate the support, and feel honored to be making music, with our amazing band and thumping crowd. We would like to thank the SDMA’s for recognizing us and SDraps.com and City Beat for the great community of musicians they support.
